Salt Lakes

Salt Lakes are very special surprise south Abu Dhabi.

It's a resurgence of salt water that forms shallow basins in the desert.

With the heat of the sun, the water evaporates and the salt crystallises, forming concretions with original shapes.

The site is located in the Al Wathba desert, about 40 minutes from the centre of Abu Dhabi.

Depending on the depth of the water during the seasons, the colours change from grey to turquoise blue.

The salty surface is thick and solid enough to support the weight of a man in some places but don't try to walk on!

It immediately brings to mind a partially frozen lake, as the crystallised salt really does look like frozen water.

For the moment, this site is open to the public, but it could be closed due to the danger of accidents.

We were lucky enough to be able to admire this surprise of nature up close.
