Stage difficulty level
Stage difficulty level
To give you an idea of the driving conditions, we've classified the routes according to difficulty.
Here's a brief explanation of the different levels:
Corresponds to a simple route, generally on asphalt, just like the ones you drive on every day in your region.
Of course, the driving style in the countries you visit is very different from that in Europe, and requires some getting used to.
This type of trip can also include stretches on unpaved roads, but these require no 4x4 driving experience and are suitable for all types of driver.
Corresponds to an itinerary that can be either on asphalt, or on winding, narrow tracks with the impossibility of passing vehicles and requiring complex maneuvers.
It can also involve steep, vertiginous mountain roads or shallow fords. Or even well-marked tracks with corrugated sheet metal.
These routes don't require any particular 4x4 skills, but you do need to be in control of your vehicle, and know how to perform complex maneuvers, even in reverse.
Corresponds to an itinerary on trails (and/or off-road) that are more difficult due to slopes, inclines, state of deterioration, sandy passages, deep fords or dune crossings. These routes are generally run with the 4x4 gear engaged, and sometimes with the short gear ratios (4L).
You need to be able to tackle crossings, bridge crossings and slopes with confidence and dexterity.
These routes involve moderate risk, so caution is always the order of the day.
Mastery of 4x4 driving is required, and expert supervision is strongly recommended.
Corresponds to an itinerary on trails or off-piste with dangerous passages, vertiginous ascents and descents, large sandy areas, high dune crossings or fords over 60cm deep.
It can also be a route where GPS navigation skills are required in a desert or very isolated area with no landmarks. Or rocky areas.
On these routes, you need to proceed with caution, alternating between long-gear and short-gear driving modes, while controlling the grip of your wheels on very difficult terrain.
These routes are not suitable for drivers with no 4x4 experience if they are not accompanied by experts.
