Morocco GPS Routes and Maps

Imilichi - Tinghir

This route crosses the Atlas mountains, so it's best to avoid it in winter due to the high risk of snow.

The roads and tracks are mountainous, with many twists and turns. The scenery is sublime, but you can also find yourself behind a truck without being able to overtake it for several dozen kilometers. So don't hesitate to take photo breaks.

We do not recommend driving this road at night, as many local cars are often poorly lit.

Merzouga - KemKem

From Merzouga, numerous tracks lead to Zagora and Lake Iriki. The general direction is east->west, so it's hard to go wrong.

Be careful not to venture too far south, however, as the border with Algeria is heavily militarized. This itinerary offers some particularly interesting and not (too) touristy spots, with an overnight stop in Kem Kem.

This will allow you to enjoy the magnificent colors of the sunset and a starry night.

Beware, depending on weather conditions (rain), the route could be difficult, with the possibility of getting stuck in muddy ground.

KemKem -> Zagora

Nice route to the Zagora palm grove, well worth the detour, where it's good to spend a night and enjoy the good restaurants.

The route is sandy on the first part, then very pleasant in the valley as you leave the desert. There are some very good hotels in Zagora, and the prices are quite reasonable. An opportunity to treat yourself after a few nights' bivouac.

Remember to stock up on supplies for the rest of your trip if you decide to follow the Zagora-Erg-Chegaga-Fint routes below.

Beware, depending on weather conditions (rain), the route could be difficult, with the possibility of getting stuck in muddy ground.

Zagora->Erg Chegaga

Leaving Zagora, we return to the desert after a few kilometers of asphalt roads.

The dunes get bigger and bigger as we get closer to Erg Chegaga. Here you'll find many tourist campsites. But there's nothing like a good old-fashioned bivouac in a secluded wilderness spot to watch the sun set. Nights can be quite chilly, so bring a fire and a good sleeping bag.

Respect nature and clean up your camp when you leave.

Beware, depending on weather conditions (rain), the route could be difficult, with the possibility of getting stuck in muddy ground.

Erg Chegaga->Fint

After a beautiful starry night, we're ready to cross Lake Iriki (a large dry salt lake) where you can set your horses free.

Be careful, though, as a hole or a small dune could make you wish you'd stepped on the gas.Follow the track towards Foum Zguid, where you'll find a tarmac road and shops.

If you've let the air out of your tires, it's time to reinflate them.

Our route heads back north on the small roads and tracks of the Atlas Mountains.

In winter, the last part of this route may be impassable due to snow. Check with a gendarmerie before heading north.
